Hypomyces transformans Peck, Ann. Rep. New York State Mus. 29: 57, 1878.

Anamorph: Sepedonium sp.

Teleomorph in nature: Subiculum effuse, vivid yellow(5Y8/10) to yellowish brown(10YR6/4), light brown(10YR6/8), covering entire surface of hymenium; hymenial hyphae 3-5.5 μm in widt, parenchymatous, septate, thick-walled and KOH (-). Perithecia light brown(5YR6/6) to brownish orange(5YR6/10), orange(5YR7/12), obpyriform to broadly ellipsoidal, (323-)363-396(-416)×(291-)343-429(-442) μm, born in groups immersed in the mycelia; papilla conical, (79-)132-165(-185)×(152-)198-264(-449) μm. Asci cylindrical, (185-)204.5-237.5(-251)×(6.5-)8.5-10(-11) mm, eightspored with a stalk 11-13 (-25.5) μm long, forming a pore at the slightly thick-walled apex. Ascospores hyaline, fusiform, aseptate, (21-)35-37(-41)×6.5-8(-11) μm, verrucose with warts of 0.5-1 μm in diameter, apiculate but rounded at both ends; apiculi (2.5-)4-5 μm long.  Characteristics in culture: Colonies on MEA, grow rapidly to reach 7-12 mm in diameter. after 7 days at 25oC, floccose, pastel yellow(5Y9/4) to light yellow(5Y9/6), vivid yellow(5Y8/10), margins dentate, odor none, reverse vivid yellow(5Y8/10) to orange(10YR7/12), Cadmium orange(10YR7/14). Hyphae are hyaline to pale yellow(5Y9/2), septate, thick-walled, (3)5-5.5(-8) μm.  Conidiophores born from aerial hyphae, semi-macronematous, septate, slightly thick-walled, two to three times branched irregularly, 5-7 μm wide, forming conidiogenous cells at the apex. Conidiogenous cells born laterally or as a main branch of conidiophores, solitary or in a whorl, hyaline, (67-)194-247.5 × 5-5.5(-7) μm, lanceolate, gradually tapered to the apex of 2.5-3 (-3.5) μm in width. Conidia solitary or two from the apex of conidiogenous cells, hyaline, aseptate, cylindrical to long ellipsoidal, thin-walled, smooth, (8-)13-17.5(-25.5) × (3-)5-6.5(-8) μm. Chlamydospores produced laterally on the substrate hyphae or terminally at the apex of the branches, pale yellow(5Y9/2)to Pastel yellow(5Y9/4), vivid yellow(5Y8/10), verrucose, globose, (15-)17.5-20 μm in width.

Habitat: parasitic on Suillus bovinus (Pers.) Roussel
